I am scheduled for an operation on 12/15 to repair a hernia. That's what you can look forward to as you get past your prime. To be honest, it doesn't really bother me other than the strange sensation of pushing "it" back in from time to time.
In fact, I have started to get serious about trying to prepare for the AH135. To get my head right, I spent four days and three nights out recently using my trusty kicksled along the Northshore Trail. I got back yesterday afternoon (Sunday 12/7). If (and only if), the conditions are good, my plan is to use the kicksled for the AH135. For conditions to be good for kicksledding, it needs to be relatively warm, combined with an adequate snow base, and preferably on a groomed track. If it is cold (under about 15 degrees or colder) combined with old snow that has been torn up from the paddle tracks that come standard on many of the newer snowmobiles, there is no glide and it starts to feel like one is pushing a loaded grocery cart in a sandbox. On this recent training effort, I enjoyed good conditions on Thursday and Friday, Saturday was OK but decidedly more effort was involved, lots of walking, but Sunday it was really cold and the snow was really torn up by a group of sledders that came by Saturday night. I really had to work hard to make the 15 miles back to my car as there was basically no kick and glide, just pushing the sled forward. I parked at the same sport as the start of the Heck of the North. When the conditions are just right, one can really make good time. So if conditions are good, I'll employ the kicksled and if conditions are not so good, I'll use the bike. More to come...
